Nationals Move to Michigan/Sullivan Named Director Print E-mail

The BFA Hot Air Competition Division and the Holiday Balloonfest Inc. have announced that the 2009 US National Hot Air Balloon Championship will be held in Calhoun County, Battle Creek, Michigan. Fifty of the nation's top competitive balloon pilots will vie for the national title and a share of the $15,000 prize money. Registration and Master Briefing is set for Wednesday, August 26th with competition beginning the next morning, Thursday, August 27 and concluding on Sunday, August 30th.

HACD Event Director David Levin will not be available for the championship this year because of an international commitment. Maury Sullivan of Ohio, the currentHACD Rules Manager has been named Event Director for the '09 Nationals and is at work assembling his staff. Sullivan is well known for his role as ChampionshipDirector of the Hall of Fame Team Championships.

The 2009 Nationals would not be possible without the support of both Holiday Balloonfest Inc. and Curves International.

 
Vencel Enters 2009 as "Most Improved"! Print E-mail

Travis Vencel has won the “Most Improved” year-end National Ranking List Award for 2008. This award is determined by comparing a pilot’s place on the National Ranking list in the current year vs the previous year. Vencel won the award by virtue of his astounding leap from 190th in 2007 to 36th in 2008 - a jump of 154 positions.
However, he was not the only HACD pilot to show significant improvement. Others included:

Will Lapointe +138
Warren Smith +133
Wayne Standefer +130
Nick Meleski +117
Ray Bair +114

A total of 85 of the 243 pilots on the 2008 National Ranking List showed an improvement in their year end ranking vs. 2007.

Sullivan Named Rules Manager/Annie Award Winner Print E-mail

HACD Board Member Maury Sullivan of Ohio has agreed to take on the role of Rules Manager for the HACD. He replaces Paul Clinton who resigned after long and valued service to the HACD. Sullivan has been centrally involved in the recent rewriting of the competition rule book.

New $25 HACD Rookie Card Established Print E-mail

Following on the success of the one-time $10 sanction card offer made in 2008, the HACD Board of Directors have voted to establish a $25 Rookie Card. These reduced fee sanction cards are available only to pilots who have never previously held a CD sanction task card. Unlike the limited $10 offer, the Rookie Card will become a permanent fixture in the HACD member structure.
