The owners of the Rocky Mountain Balloon Festival, held at Chatfield State Park, Colorado annually from 2000-2008, announced today that the Festival is closing permanently. In announcing the closure, Terry Smith, the event manager, said that many factors contributed to the decision to shut down. “The spectators were great and very enthusiastic about the event, but without financial support from the communities in the area, it was no longer financially feasible to continue. We hoped that as the Festival grew in popularity, financial support would increase, but that was not the case. “
Terry Smith and Gery deKoevend operated the Festival as an LLC, and each year the attendance and name recognition grew. The Festival enjoyed great support from area newspapers and TV stations, and had coverage from The Weather Channel and the BBC, among others, over the years.
Terry said the Festival website will remain active for a few more weeks, and then will also be shut down.
The following announcement is being posted on the Rocky Mountain Balloon Festival website, www.rockymountainballoonfestival.com
“We regret to announce that the Rocky Mountain Balloon Festival is closing permanently, effective immediately. We have enjoyed our association with the thousands of spectators who attended in the nine years the Festival was active. It was a special event to us and many of you, and we thank you for your support.
Lack of financial support from the communities in the surrounding area, and increasing difficulties holding the event in a Colorado State Park contributed to this decision.
We want to acknowledge the ongoing support of our long time sponsors, who made the event possible each year: RE/MAX, Amerigas, KEZW, Daktronics, Holiday Inn Lakewood, Elite Sound, Bimbo Bakeries, Noodles & Co at Kipling and C470, Starbucks Coffee at Kipling and C470, Ocean Spray, Civil Air Patrol, and Boy Scout Troop 166.
Thank you to all the balloon pilots and crew members who made this event such a success each year, providing great memories for the spectators and sponsors.”
