Bobby Bradley is ready. He has been training for about five years and learned from some of the most experienced and decorated pilots in the sport of ballooning.
But he'll be making his own mark on the sport when he lifts off from a desolate patch of New Mexico desert in about seven weeks: At 9 years old, Bobby will become the youngest trained pilot to fly solo in an ultra-light hot air balloon.

Dear Members, A number of balloonists have expressed concerns about the way ballooning was portrayed in a NASCAR commercial that aired on Fox TV this past Sunday. The commercial is depicting the thrill of NASCAR, but has the unintended result of making our sport look hazardous and extreme.

There's still time to make plans to attend the 50th Anniversary BFA National Convention, April 7-10, 2011 in Des Moines, Iowa! Joe Kittinger headlines an all-star lineup of speakers on tap to deliver an unprecedented entertaining and educational experience for pilots of all interests and experience levels. Plus there are multiple crew training sessions, the National Balloon Museum and the opportunity to meet many of the balloonists who've helped shape the BFA in its first fifty years. Here are a couple of the sessions that may interest you: Birth of the Modern Hot Air Balloons with Orv Olivier Orv will provide the history of the development and flight in 1960 of Ed Yost's first modern hot air balloon and early flights by ballooning pioneer Tracy Barnes. Orv is a veteran balloon pilot, with a long interest in ballooning history that was developed when he worked for Raven in the 1970's. Balloon Insurance Panel with Ken Walter Ken, BFA Board Member and liaison to the BFA Insurance Committee will moderate this session involving three of the companies insuring balloons, pilots and crews. The format will involve a town hall meeting format. It will consist of an informal session featuring representatives from IMC, Schantz and EIB Insurance companies. This session will give the attendees an opportunity to get together to discuss emerging issues and to voice concerns and preferences for ballooning community. All attendees will have a chance to talk personally in a relaxed environment about the things which matter to them. Attendees are welcome to provide questions or concerns in advance if they would prefer anonymity. And Becky Wigeland, curator of the National Balloon Museum extends this invitation: "Come and visit the National Balloon Museum Booth at the Convention. Check out the Pictures of the new renovations that we have been doing and look at the selections done by Carol Sherman for the Stain Glass Window Project. We are still needing sponsors and donations for the project! All of the US Hot Air Balloon Champions from 1970-2010 please stop by the booth or the Museum and be sure to sign the poster honoring all the Champions pictured on our Wall of Champions at the Museum. We are planning on a photo shoot for all of the attending US Hall of Fame Inductees at the Museum during the Museum Tour on Friday April 8th at 11:00. Please try to attend. The convention is set for April 7-10, 2011 in Des Moines, IA. Log on to www.bfa50.com for the latest info on the convention and hotel accommodations. Still not sure? Here's what others have said about the convention experience in 2008, "The National Convention is the only opportunity I know of to meet pilots and crew so you can have really good discussions about ballooning without balloons being in the way. The information you discover from other balloonists make the journey worthwhile. Staying in touch with good friends is important and making new friends is priceless. If you have a question, someone there has the answer." - Phil Bryant Pilots and crew from 34 states have already registered! Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
