Celebrating 100 Years Of Licensed Women Pilots

Susan Larson, President of the Ninety-Nines, has committed to flying women who have never flown before in both her Cessna 182 and Hughes 500 helicopter during the week of March 6-12, in celebration of 100 years of licensed women pilots. "I can't imagine a more satisfying reason to go fly, not that we really need one," said Larson.

On March 8, 1910, Raymonde de Laroche, a French balloonist, became the first woman ever to earn a pilot's license. One century later, the ranks of women pilots continues to grow, but women represent only 6% of all licensed pilots in most countries. As this first-century milestone is reached, a group of modern women pilots is taking steps to make sure the second century is off to a flying start.

FAA Rule Concerning Airmen Certificates Print E-mail
Monday, 18 January 2010 23:52

Certified pilots as well as airframe and powerplant mechanics are required to upgrade to a new "plastic" certificate or lose their privileges. For pilots the deadline is March 31, 2010 (FAR 61.19). For A&P mechanics the deadline is march 31, 2013 (FAR 65.15). The regulation went into effect on March 31 last year with little fanfare, leaving most pilots and mechanics in the dark.  Application can be made at the FAA’s registry web site for a small fee.

Mom Will Serve Time Too, And The Pair May Not Capitalize On Their Stunt

We don't know how this ever must have seemed like a good idea. A prank to draw media attention that wound up costing taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars as various entities were scrambled to save what they thought was a six-year-old in a box slung under a homemade mylar balloon drifting above Colorado. The latest chapter of the "Balloon Boy" story has come to a close.

Seven FSS Facilities Closing In February Print E-mail
Written by Glen Moyer

Lockheed Martin, which won a 10-year, $1.7 billion contract in 2005 to operate the flight service system for the FAA, says it will close seven of the remaining 13 FSS facilities in February of next year. There were 58 such facilities when Lockheed won the contract 4 years ago.
Lockheed Martin Spokeswoman Jan Gottfredsen told the Lansing State Journal the move is due to decreased demand nationwide. “There’s been a general decline in general aviation traffic,” Gottfredsen said. “This will enable us to meet the performance level with fewer facilities.”
AOPA reports that the facilities slated for closure include  Columbia, Missouri; Honolulu; Kankakee, Illinois; Lansing, Michigan; Nashville, Tennessee; Seattle, Washington; and St. Petersburg, Florida.
