The top 50 women hot air balloon pilots from around the world will have to wait until another year to compete at the 1st FAI Women's World Championship. The 2011 Championship has been CANCELLED. This event was scheduled for May 21-29, 2011 in Valmiera, Latvia. At this time, there has been no announcement to re-schedule the event.
Since 1978, Longview, TX has been host to the Great Texas Balloon Race, which routinely attracts top pilots from around the country to compete in East Texas. This past weekend representatives from both the Great Texas Balloon Race (GTBR) and the BFA's Hot Air Competition Division (HACD) met in Longview to discuss the GTBR's bid proposal to host the 2012-14 U.S. National Championships.
The Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) and it's Ballooning Commission (CIA) recently published their Autumn 2010 newsletter. Congratulations to John Petrehn for claiming the top spot in the latest World Ranking List as well as fellow Americans Nick Donner (4th), Joe Heartsill (7th) and Paul Petrehn (15th) on each of their respective rankings.
Longtime balloonist, Bob Zanella passed away December 2, 2010 after a short illness. Bob’s ballooning career started in 1971 with the purchase of a ‘state of the art’ Semco Balloon system.
BFA member Johnny Petrehn has claimed his 2nd World Championship in competition against 117 of the world's best hot air balloon pilots in Hungary. Petrehn used the fnal flight of 6 tasks to leapfrog teammate Nick Donner who had led the compeition from the beginning but ended up in 2nd.
