How NEL scores and averages are computed can be confusing. Below is an example of how an NEL Score would be calculated for a pilot.
Given a competitor with the tasks shown follow along each step to see how the NEL Score is calculated. You can click on the image to see a bigger version.
- No NEL Score is calculated until the pilot has achieved a result on 5 tasks. Their "first 5".
- Once 5 tasks has been reached an NEL Score is calculated using the NEL formula found in the "HACD Policies, Procedures, and Regulations Section II c)"
Those first 5 tasks averaged out set a baseline score that the pilot will not drop below for the competitive year. So with the scores above if the pilot never scored anything higher than a 577 their NEL Score would remain at 577. - Keep an eye on column “C”. As the pilot flies more tasks C goes up. That includes more of their flown tasks into the calculation of the average. A pilots top (C) scores are used for the calculation of their NEL Score.
- C = INT((N+1)/2) + 2)
- N = Number of tasks flown thus far
- After the pilot flew 6 tasks their score goes up. The score of "224" has been dropped and the average is now using the scores: 788, 701, 592, 584, 342. This puts the pilots NEL Score at 601. It will now never go below 601.
- On the 7th task the and additional task is included in the formula and the pilots NEL Score dropped. Oh no! But their NEL Score at this point will still be 601, because a pilots NEL score will always be the highest average of their highest scoring tasks. The formula for "C" has now increased to 6. This includes the tasks with scores of 788, 701, 592, 584, 505, 342. Which adds up to 3,512. And averages out to 585. The 585 average is ignored since it is below the highest achieved average of 601.
- The pilots 8th tasks of 745 makes the previous 342 drop off. This increases the score to 652.
- The pilot than achieves a 955 on their 9th task. This again increases "C" which means their highest scoring 7 tasks are now included in the average determining their NEL Score. Those tasks being 9(955 points), 8(745 points), 3(788 points), 4(701 points), 5(592 points), 2(584 points), and 7(505 points).
